Health & Wellness

I help people deal with many different health and wellness challenges. In particular, I often work with women and men, who are high-flying executives or business people. Typically, they are not enjoying their success or lives as much as they should. They’ve worked hard to achieve success, but feel empty with exhaustion and experience a lack of joy in their life. They might be achieving phenomenal success, but they are sabotaging themselves with their thoughts or actions. This can often lead to addictive behaviors as a coping mechanism.

A majority of successful women that I see have lives that are out of balance. There is an incompatibility between work and home life that is taking a toll on their mental and physical well-being.

In treating successful men, I’ve found that outwardly they appear to have it all; but inwardly they just want to stop the racing around or to be more in control of physical and mental issues that are damaging their life.

It only takes from one to three 90 minute sessions to feel results and achieve greater balance.

Bladder Control Problems

A leaking bladder is a problem that is embarrassing and a nuisance at any age. As we get older, our bladders often get weaker. About half of older women will experience urinary incontinence at some point in their lives. Younger women can get stress incontinence too, which leads to leaks when coughing, laughing, sneezing, heavy lifting, or jogging. If it is related to a bacteria infection, then a doctor will usually give antibiotics to clear it up quickly.

Bladder control problems in men can cause frequent trips to the bathroom and difficulty starting and stopping urine flow. If the bladder still feels full after just emptying the bladder and/or if there is a burning sensation during urination and/or blood in the urine, then it is important to see a doctor and have both your bladder and prostrate checked. Sometimes difficulty getting an ejaculation, having a painful ejaculation, or finding blood in the semen can be warning signs of prostatitis or other health issues.

How does it affect your life?

Urinary incontinence affects almost all parts of your life publicly, socially, and privately. You don’t really want to tell anyone about the problem, and when you do, they don’t seem to take it seriously. Doesn’t everyone pee? So, you suffer mostly in silence even though it feels like your life is revolving around it.

There is added stress when going out into public places, because you get very little warning, if any, that you have to urinate. Whenever you do go out, you make it your mission to find the closest washroom when you first arrive in order to plan your emergency route when the time comes.

At work, school, and in social situations, bladder control problems can be managed to some degree by making more frequent trips to the washroom. However, this is easier for an adult than it is for a child, who has to get teacher permission before leaving most school classrooms. Sometimes less understanding teachers will respond to a bathroom break request by saying, “No, you just went” amplifying an already stressful situation. It’s important for parents and guardians to privately make the teacher aware of the situation to avoid humiliating situations for their child.

On a personal level, incontinence is known to affect people’s confidence and self-esteem if you let it. It also affects how sexy you feel. Nothing shouts “turnoff” greater to your lover than when you wear an adult diaper that you can depend on. So, spontaneity goes out the window for intimacy. Planning ahead is your saving grace. Even then you worry if you will leak during intimacy, because there are no guarantees. Does any of this sound familiar?

Why is it happening?

There are some steps you can take to be your own advocate and find out why your bladder is leaking. The process usually starts by consulting your doctor and getting a urine sample tested as well as looking at any possible bladder side effects from existing medications. Often it will be suggested that you keep a journal of what you drink, how often you pee and leak.

Incontinence in men can be a result of an enlarged prostrate putting pressure on the bladder and urethra, which disrupts smooth urine flow and may cause sexual problems.

This is not an exhaustive list by any means as there could be a variety of reasons for incontinence. In my coaching and hypnotherapy practice, I can offer an additional viewpoint as part of a team approach to your problem. I know women who had urinary incontinence for five years and were able to turn it around to have complete bladder control in a matter of three weeks. On top of that success, they did it without the use of medications.

What options are there to fix it?

Your doctor may recommend Kegel exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles. This can be combined with a biofeedback method for checking out the bladder and pelvic muscles. You may be sent for ultrasound imagery or MRI. Getting a referral to an Urologist specialist is a great idea. An Urologist may give you the opportunity to have your bladder flushed out. This procedure will provide the Urologist with added information about the muscles, tissues, condition, and performance of your bladder. Having your bladder flushed may also give you some relief in itself. Afterward, you may receive a medication prescription. In some cases, surgery on the bladder may be recommended to enlarge the bladder. Surgery also happens if you choose to have a device inserted for the stimulation of nerves in the bladder. In other cases, Botox injections into the bladder muscles may be recommended as this has helped many people. Some people have tried inserting a pessary device into the vagina to support the uterus. The option that most people tend to forget about is hypnosis and hypnotherapy for bladder control problems.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy can help you make lifestyle changes that will support your bladder to work better. Dietary changes that are good for bladder control include cutting down on caffeinated drinks, alcohol, chocolate, tomatoes, citrus, cranberry juice, berries, and spicy foods. It is important that you don't cut back on your fluids, because that could make your urine concentrated, which can irritate your bladder. Also, you want to drink lots of fluids and eat a high-fibre diet to prevent constipation, which can also make an over active bladder worse. It is strongly suggested that if you smoke that you consider quitting. Living a smoke free life will make you healthier and lessen the chances of causing bladder leaks when you cough.

Lastly, hypnosis and hypnotherapy can find the root cause of any anxiety or fear that may be the cause of bladder control problems. After the cause is found, the painful memories are neutralized for a calming effect and less frequent trips to the bathroom.

Urinary incontinence is no small matter. I’ve just touched the tip of the iceberg in this article. If you make an appointment for a session with me, you can expect empathy, knowledge, and confidentiality on bladder control problems. I’m interested in and dedicated to going beyond coping strategies and getting to the cause behind the issue of a leaking bladder. I believe bladder control can be an achievable goal.
